Boom poles, fish poles, mic booms, or whatever you happen to call it. Boom poles are one of the most inexpensive, yet amazing pieces of film gear, that indie filmmakers must own.

When you’re a low-budget filmmaker, you can’t usually afford the same high-quality boom mics they use on a Hollywood film set. But, guess what?┬áThe little-know secret, in the business, is if you get your microphone close enough to your actor’s mouth, your current microphone will sound pretty amazing.┬áThe simple concept of proximity effect. The closer the microphone is to the actor’s mouth; the better the quality of sound. Simple right?

So, how do you get the mic closer to your actor’s mouth? With a boom pole, of course.

Today, we bring you a couple DIY boom pole project videos and a video about the proximity effect.

Enjoy!
